How to Use MiniSplit Match
Follow these simple steps to find your perfect HVAC system
How long does it take to use MiniSplit Match?
2-3 minutes for most systems. Simple 1-3 zone configurations take about 1 minute. Complex multi-zone systems (4-8 zones) take 2-3 minutes. The tool guides you through 4 steps: brand selection, zone configuration, distribution validation, and results review. Much faster than manual methods (2-3 hours).
Getting Started
MiniSplit Match is designed to make HVAC system selection as easy as possible. Whether you're a homeowner planning a DIY installation or a contractor looking for quick specifications, our tool will guide you through the process step by step.
Step-by-Step Guide
Initial Setup
Choose Your Brand
Select from our supported manufacturers: Fujitsu, LG, and Mitsubishi. Each brand has unique features and specifications that affect system compatibility.
Number of Zones
Specify how many separate areas you want to condition. Each zone requires its own indoor unit, and the total number affects outdoor unit selection.
Simple Sizing Calculator (Optional)
Enable automatic sizing estimates for BTU recommendations based on your location and construction details.
- ZIP Code: Determines your climate zone for regional adjustments
 - Construction Era: Affects insulation and efficiency factors

Zone Configuration
Configure each zone individually based on your specific requirements. The tool will always guide you to a valid system, following all restriction rules for each brand:
Manual BTU Selection
- BTU Capacity: Choose from available options based on your cooling needs
 - Unit Type: Select from a range of different units by brand

Using Sizing Calculator
If enabled in Step 1, provide additional details for each zone:
- Square Footage: Total floor area of the zone
 - Room Type: Kitchen, bedroom, living room, etc. (affects load factors)

The system will automatically calculate and select appropriate BTU ratings based on your inputs.
Distribution System
Some configurations require distribution boxes to manage multiple zones:
Automatic Detection
The system determines if distribution boxes are required based on your zone configuration and selected equipment.
Distribution Options
- No Distribution Box: Direct connection for simpler systems
 - Single Distribution Box: For moderate capacity systems
 - Multiple Distribution Boxes: For high-capacity or complex zoning (max 2 boxes)

Port and Capacity Validation
The tool automatically validates that selected distribution boxes have sufficient ports and capacity for your zones.
Results and Selection
Review compatible systems ranked by performance and efficiency:
System Rankings
- Best: Optimal performance and efficiency for your configuration
 - Better: High-quality alternatives with good value
 - Good: Reliable options that meet your requirements

System Information
Each result includes:
- Complete component list with model numbers
 - Technical specifications and ratings
 - Capacity utilization and efficiency metrics
 - The most critical AHRI data
 - Direct purchase links from trusted retailers

Pro Tips for Best Results
Accurate Measurements
Measure your spaces carefully. Undersized systems won't provide adequate comfort, while oversized systems waste energy and cycle inefficiently.
Consider Room Usage
Kitchens and rooms with large windows need higher capacity. Bedrooms and less-used spaces may need lower capacity.
Climate Matters
Enter your correct ZIP code for sizing estimates. Northern climates prioritize heating capacity, while southern climates focus on cooling.
Unit Type Selection
Wall-mounted units are most common and cost-effective. Ceiling cassettes work well in open areas. Ducted units are ideal for hidden installations.
Distribution Planning
Distribution boxes add flexibility but require additional installation work. Simple systems may work better with direct connections.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
No systems found for my configuration
Our goal is to minimize the situations where this happens, but it does still happen! Try adjusting your zone BTU selections or unit types. Some combinations may exceed equipment capacity limits or violate manufacturer restrictions.
Distribution box shows as required
This is determined by manufacturer specifications. If you require a larger system but do not want to use a distribution box, Fujitsu never uses one.
Limited BTU or unit type options
Available options are filtered based on compatibility with your other zones and BTU headroom of compatible outdoor equipment. Try adjusting other zones first.
Sizing estimates seem incorrect
Verify your ZIP code, construction era, and room types are correct. You can always override automatic estimates by switching to manual mode.
Accuracy & Reliability
How accurate is the sizing calculator?
Our simple sizing calculator provides estimates within 10-15% accuracy for typical residential applications. It considers climate zone, construction era, room type, square footage, and ceiling height. This is accurate enough for equipment selection in most cases. For critical commercial applications or unusual scenarios, professional load calculations may be recommended, but our calculator works well for the majority of residential and light commercial projects.
How do you ensure compatibility accuracy?
Our compatibility engine is built directly from manufacturer specifications and compatibility matrices. We validate every equipment combination against brand-specific rules, distribution box requirements, port capacities, and BTU limitations. The database is updated regularly as manufacturers release new equipment or update specifications.
What if I find an error in the compatibility checking?
While our system is extensively validated, if you encounter a compatibility error or believe a configuration should work but isn't shown as compatible, please contact us with the specific details. We investigate all reported issues promptly and update our compatibility rules if needed. Your feedback helps improve accuracy for everyone.
Can I trust the results for professional installations?
Yes. Our tool was created by someone with 15+ years of experience in HVAC distribution, specifically designing and specifying mini-split systems for contractors. Many HVAC professionals use our tool for quotes and system design. Pro plan subscribers get access to AHRI ratings and complete technical specifications suitable for professional bids and installations.
